A Mother's Day moment to remember
On Mother’s day this year, my son Carter (age 6) gave Kim and I a great reminder of why I am in this race.
Kim awoke Mother’s day morning to an amazing gift. Propped near our bedside was an envelope with a hand drawn arrow written upon it, skillfully placed so that the arrow pointed back toward our bed. Carter came bounding in to encourage Kim to “find” her gift. After opening the envelope and reading the very sweet, handmade card that was within, Carter told Kim that she needed to follow the arrow and look under the bed. Kim pulled out an old frog aquarium that contained twenty-four quarters. Kim was mystified, so Carter explained that “this is your Mother’s Day gift . . . the quarters are enough for you to buy daddy another yard sign for the campaign”. Wow! Needless to say, Kim and I were wiping away the tears by this time.
Unlike Mother’s Days in the past, I had no part in the planning of this gift. Carter said that he had overheard Kim and I discussing a damaged yard sign; we think a lawn mower got the best of it. He went on to say that he had been saving for some time and wanted to give Kim his savings as a gift so that the damaged sign could be replaced. It’s amazing that such a small gift, a mere six dollars in quarters, could mean so much.
This small gesture affirms I am doing the right thing. Six dollars is a lot for Carter and a tremendous outreach on his part, but what still chokes me up is how clearly he understands the magnitude of public service and sacrifice in this family adventure we call a legislative campaign.
That’s why I am asking that you follow the spirit and intention of my son and consider giving a “Carter-sized” contribution to my efforts to build a better community. It’s not about the amount that is given, but rather about the spirit of support that the gift represents. Thank you for your support thus far and your efforts to ensure that I remain grounded in this community and the families in it.
